OVERCOMING STRESS (6) Daily Devotional Thursday, July 18... Very early in the morningJesusprayed. Mk 1:35 NIV Make prayer a daily habit. Prayer is the great stress-reliever. Jesus began His day with prayer. He often stopped throughout the day to pray, and He ended each day with prayer. Now, if Jesus made time for prayer as busy as He was, how much more do you need to do it! Time alone with God can be a decompression chamber for life’s stresses. We talk to God in prayer, tell Him what’s on our minds, and let Him talk to us as we read the Bible. Then we look at our schedule, evaluate our priorities, and wait for instructions. If we lived that way, the pharmaceutical industry would go broke because we wouldn’t need a fraction of the tranquilizers they make on the market! Many of our problems come from our inability to sit still. We just don’t know how to be quiet. God says, Be still, and know that I am God (Ps 46:10). And one reason we don’t know God more personally is because we can’t be still. We’re too busy to be quiet and just think. Someone said, It seems to be an ironic habit of man that when he loses his way he doubles his speed. The story’s told of a World War II Air Force pilot who flew over the Pacific. When he radioed the tower and the controller asked for his location, he replied, I don’t knowbut I’m making record time! A lot of us are like that, speeding through life without knowing where we’re headed. We need to start our morning with prayer like Jesus did, and stop throughout the day to pray again and recharge our spiritual batteries.

Gold is hidden deep in the earth, and it takes hours of backbreaking work removing tons of dirt scoop by scoop to bring it to the surface. Likewise, crucifying the flesh is excruciating and time-consuming and when you follow Jesus, you give Him digging rights. Satan tries to bury your treasure under memories of past sin and failure, but God keeps on digging because He’s going for the gold! Joni Eareckson Tada became a quadriplegic after a driving accident. She writes: Often during a single day I’ll have to make twenty-six different adjustments in my wheelchairsometimes I think I’ll drive me and my friends crazy. That’s when Iremember, ‘To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.’ Life’s supposed to be difficult. Jesus said in this world we would have trouble (See Jn 16:33). And that it has been grantedthat isgiftedon behalf of Christ not only to believe in Him, but to suffer for Him. Sometimes I don’t want that gift, but if Jesus learned obedience through the things He suffered, then I can learn from twenty-six different adjustments in my sitting position. God desires intimacy with usbut on His termsand those terms require us to suffer as His Son suffered. So next time you get hit broadside with a bruising disappointment, God’s asking you to follow in Jesus’ steps.
