How did I lose control of this situation? I find myself reflecting on this question more frequently as my almost-3 year old tests his boundaries more and more... often... And then I reflect on this question: SHOULDN’T I KNOW BETTER?!? With the professional hats I wear as an occupational therapist and an ISR instructor, I can tell you alllllll about positive behavioral reinforcement, sensory regulation, shaping the environment to promote success... And yet, here I find myself struggling in a battle of wills against this tiny person about putting his shoes on when we’re running late, I am sensing one of his tantrums coming on and I’m feeling myself start to sweat. At home, I’m a mom. Not an expert. I’ll try to be better tomorrow: Set him up for success. Leave 15 minutes of extra time to get out the door, so I’m not racing the clock, under pressure. Give him choices (power) within the framework of what I want: Do you want to put on your sneakers or your boots today? Step away from the tantrum. Try not to get drawn in to the chaos. How does this apply to ISR? If a child starts off crying during lessons, instead of joining them in their chaos (It’s ok! You’re so brave! It’s almost over!), we recommend that parents or caregivers simply smile and calmly state, You’re learning a lot! I love watching you! Those big emotions will sooner dampen down. We got this, guys.

Such an amazing story! This is our why! We both get several messages each year from families whose own child has used their skills to save themselves! We are honored to be a part of ISR! #isr #isrsaveslives #safeisfun #swimandfloat #skillsbeforethrills

I've seen some shocking footage floating around of lessons that claim to be ISR lessons. They are not. You won't see children being thrown, pushed, tossed or otherwise manhandled in the water during an ISR lesson. If you are on the fence about ISR lessons, the best thing you can do is contact your local ISR Instructor and GO WATCH!! Observe the lessons and talk to the parents that have been through the program. Another way is to check the ISR National the locator at www.infantswim.com. #ISR #InfantSwimmingResource

The short answer to this- probably! Their instructor is new, the pool facility is new, and they are learning to do something new...put those elements together a...nd you have a recipe for possible Children like routine & familiarity, so we are not surprised when they fuss in the initial days or weeks of lessons. Thankfully, we find that this behavior typically tapers off as they begin to build trust & a rapport with their instructor and as they feel more confident in their skills While it's tempting to hold out for a magical "no cry" method to swimming or to wait until your child is older with the hope that they will cry less, keep in mind that they are the most vulnerable to drowning between the ages of 1-4. Our swim parents will tell you that any tears are a worthy trade-off for the priceless self-rescue skills they will learn! Visit www.infantswim.com to find an instructor near you

Vaughn (2 yrs old) was not a fan of lessons at the beginning but came around and had some fun! Learning new things can be hard, but competence leads to confidence. #ntxswim #infantswimforney #isrforney #isr #isrsaveslives #safeisfun #swimandfloat #skillsbeforethrills

I have parents all the time say, I don’t think ISR is for me, don’t you throw babies into the pool. Well that’s far from the truth. If I threw kids in the po...ol then how would I ever expect them to trust me. Trust is earned & should never be expected no matter the age. I had to earn this little girls trust before she was ever going to learn from me. I was calm in speaking with her, even when she was screaming. I was gentle & guided her in what I was going to show her next. I never surprised her. Everyday, throughout the entire lesson she would say you’re not going to drop me? And every time I would reply, I’m not going to drop you. After 8 lessons, I could tell I was gaining her trust when the repetitive question only came a few times, then only once in a lesson. Miss Reagan is now swimming and floating & on her way to being a little fishy come summer time. Her confidence is peaking & she continues to be an eager learner. If you’re on the fence about ISR because of things you’ve heard, I encourage you to ask around, read live reviews from instructors in your area & take a leap of faith & trust the process of ISR.

Did you know there is a difference between self-rescue swim lessons and traditional swim lessons?? I really wish I would have done my homework with Jake and un...derstood the differences between the types of lessons. Jake had 5 weeks of traditional swim lessons and never learned how to swim and even if had learned it would not have saved him in his situation. He fell into the Intracoastal waterway FULLY clothed and in the dark. The only thing that would have saved him is if he had learned to self-rescue and WITH his clothes on. Wet clothes add 5-10 pounds depending on what they are wearing so even if they know how to swim or float it might not save them if they haven't practiced in clothes. So please do your homework and choose a program that teaches your child how to rollback and float NOT one that teaches them to blow bubbles or one that uses any type of floatation device. The difference can mean life or death for your young child. If you would like to find an ISR instructor in your area or learn more about the program visit www.infantswim.com There are other self-rescue programs out there but my children have gone through ISR so I know this program very well and totally support their methods! #livelikejake #becauseofjake #isrsaveslives #teachthemtosurvive #doyourresearch #dontblowbubbles #DrowningIsPreventable www.livelikejake.org
