We spend a lot of time talking about how to make kids safe, now let’s take a minute and focus on how to protect kids from the pool when it’s not in use. Whatever type of barrier you choose (and some families install both by the way, cover and gate), you do need something. If you have questions about which type of pool protection is right for you, feel free to reach out to us! Over the past several months @kidswimla and our founder @lisafinebergcook have had the opportunity to connect with water safety organizations, swim coaches, athletes, and swim lesson advocates like never before. We are humbled and honored to have made these connections and open up the conversations of DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION within the world of aquatics. We recently sat down with @swirl_global and we wanted to share with you who is @swirl_global and how we... are coming together as coaches, athletes, advocates and students to bring swim lessons and water safety to all. Rachael and Steph with Swim Global are focused on creating a culture of inclusivity in swimming for children with special needs. Although our platforms are seemingly different, at the heart our mission is the same. Swimming is for everybody and anybody can learn to swim. This current journey that I’m on to create swim programs for underserved communities shares many of the same challenges and goals as Swim Global. Basically, how do we change the THINKING around a culture so that the mindset stops excluding anyone from learning? We want to make learning to swim more user-friendly, adaptable, flexible, affordable, and inclusive. Having these conversations and finding more people who feel this way and want to participate in creating change is the first step. Make sure to visit @swirl_global and @allkidswim to find out how you can get involved with bringing diversity and inclusion to the world of aquatics. #changethestats #swim #disablethelabel #inclusionforall #inclusion #inclusionmatters #swimclusion #swimstrength #lifeskills #community #communitysupport #communityfirst #inclusionisanact #supporting #supportingswimmers #regulation #swimlessons See more

There’s a lot of talk these days about starting your child’s journey towards water safety at a younger and younger age, and it is beneficial to start as early as possible - 5 or 6 months old. But with COVID guidelines and parents working from home and children distance learning, some extracurricular activities have been put on hold and your little one might have aged out of that "magic window". If you're planning to jump into the pool (safely) this spring, here are some FAQs... about starting swim lessons with answers from @lisafinebergcook to help your toddler or child thrive. ‘How many lessons should I sign my child up for?’ Twice a week for the summer is the answer. The reason being, that children need repetition at regular intervals in order to process new information. They also need days off in between. Once a week is fine as an activity if that’s all you can manage in your schedule but it does take a child longer to learn because seven full days in between lessons means they forget much of what they were introduced to and have to relearn it. Eventually, they’ll get it, but it does take longer. "What about intensive programs to ‘jump start’ the process?" We tell parents to think of this as an introduction to something that your child will learn to love and continue to do for the next eighty years! We know that sounds extreme but swimming is a gift and one of the few physical activities that a person can do for their entire life! There is definitely a risk involved in introducing your two-year-old to swimming via an intensive program. It can backfire and your child may end up developing intense fear around water. Swimming for the Special Needs Child In terms of working with children with special needs, we feel that the water is a superior form of exercise and incorporated into any OT or PT routine, it only enhances advancements and improves skills, coordination, and strength. It may sound extreme but there really is no downside to incorporating swim into the routine for any child with special needs. Every color, size, age, skill level, disability, injury, illnes...s, mental or physical challenge. ALL are welcome and even more amazing: ALL can, in one form or another...SWIM. Within the next few weeks, we will be hosting important conversations with advocates and organizations like @swirl_global and @ snapwithsteppingstones to discuss inclusion for special needs swimmers and their families. Stay tuned for more information! - @snapwithsteppingstones #swimlessons #borntotalk #specialneedsmom #multisensorylearning #watertherapy #differentnotless #swimminglessonssavelives #diversityinaquatics #diversityandinclusion #diversitymatters #waterthegreatequalizer #equalizer #sensoryplay #swimming See more
