Are lessons REALLY just 10 minutes?! We know, we know....it sounds a little crazy but this is very much by design. Here's a bit of info as to why we do short,... frequent lessons in ISR... It's the way young children learn As babies, we don't practice walking once a week. Standing, balancing, cruising are done in tiny increments each day as part of our experience of learning to walk. And similar to walking, swimming is a sensorimotor skill best learned by experience over time. Kids thrive on routine The consistency of the daily lesson schedule creates an optimal learning environment. When kids know where they are going, who they will be with, and what is expected of them they begin to feel confident and secure, building trust with their instructor as they are taught these priceless skills. It’s WORK! People often think of swimming as a "for fun" activity, but they forget...it's a workout! Little bodies get tired quickly, and fatigued muscles + water (the most unforgiving environment on the planet) = dangerous. Safety is our top priority, so instructors closely monitor your child's fatigue to ensure they are practicing efficiently for an optimal learning experience. Email [email protected] to register your child in my next session. #ISR #swimlessons #children #infant

This is a PSA concerning water safety and childhood drowning. This is also a personal occurrence. AND if you do not want to read the long story attached then kn...ow this... Yesterday our 4-year-old opened the living room window, climbed out and scaled the patio fence. With no help. She was poolside in moments. Now, if I have your attention keep reading. I understand I will probably take some heat from, the internets', perfect parent platform. AND I am ok with that notion. I do not identify as a perfect parent. This honesty could save a life. What I am is a mother who loves my children fiercely. I am also crazy passionate about drowning prevention. With ALL my knowledge on the topic... I still made some big mistakes. One that I will outline below. Just like many of you, I have lost daytime childcare due to COVID-19. Our newly 4-year-old is at home with me while I work. We have a decent system; She watches a morning movie and Mommy gets about an hours’ worth of computer work done. I check on her periodically and I make her watch her movie in the room directly across from my office. After the mornings' work is done, we get to spend the day together. It has been both frustrating and rewarding. Yesterday morning, during her movie, I was answering some swim emails. For those that do not know I am an ISR Instructor. It is my job to teach infants, toddlers, and children lifesaving aquatic skills. I love my job. The two pictures you see below do not look like much... until you realize all that furniture was moved by a 4-year-old. It was moved strategically and in less than 5 minutes. It was also thought out and planned well. In the first photo you can see she scooted our living room chair to the window. Unlocked the window. Slid it up. Slid the screen up and out she went. She did not use the backdoor... because it is double locked, and it has bells attached. Momma would have heard that door open. THANKFULLY, we have older pool equipment. Within seconds of the window opening, I thought "wow I can hear outside." Even though I had just checked on her. She was just snuggled under a blanket watching "Kitty Galore." I still raced to the living room. I got there in time to witness her scooting a chair from our outdoor dining table to the fence. She climbed on the chair. Went up and over the fence. Onto the bench on the other side and in less than 3 minutes (from inside to over the fence) she was poolside. Now, the reason I stopped and watched... that is the best way to see the holes in your safety system. I have since moved the bench away from the fence. Although I know it will not deter her if she really wants over. It might spare me 20-30 seconds. She has scaled the fence between my neighbor’s yard and mine... it is almost 6 feet high and no place for footing. I have watched her do that too. Children are smart. They are fast. They are determined. Unless of course you are asking them to pick up their playroom. At that time they are tired, cold, hungry and need your help. But I digress. You cannot 100% hold back a force of nature. You also cannot supervise said force of nature 100% of the time. Even if you are the most attentive parent in the world. Guess what... you still poop. You still cook. You stop to change laundry. You answer a text or an email. You can probably also point out ALL the things I did wrong... and even if you can you still cannot watch your kids 100% of the time. What you can do is give them skills. Skills that could save their life WHEN (not if) their curiosity gets the best of them. The only thing they can take with them and have on them around all bodies of water... are ISR Skills. They can and will open windows. Slip out the door. Shimmy that life jacket off. They might do it when you are unaware. BUT you can be prepared. Georgia KNOWS she is not supposed to go outside without Logan or myself. She knows the backdoor and gate are locked for a reason. She found a way around that... WHY? Because she is 4 and she wanted to go outside. I am forever grateful for her ISR skills. Yesterday was a huge reminder. AND IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE ME that she opened that window all on her own just ask Eric, the gentleman who maintenances our pool. He watched the whole thing with me. Like I said above I am fully prepared to take a lashing from the internets' perfect parent club. All because this post could potentially save one life. #isr #isrsaveslives #isrforney #ntxswim #skillsbeforethrills
