20.12.2021

This is what it's all about! Helping kiddos love and feel safe in the water (while giving their parents peace of mind).

20.12.2021

Today, we're sharing a parent story from Sarah, who is another Valley ISR parent with a now-trained kiddo! Here's what she had to say: ?... "Seeing how Ashley worked with Ruby to give her the confidence the trust herself. It was so much more than a swimming lesson for us!" . "The day she asked to do an extra swim." See more

At ISR, our mission is that "Not One More Child Drowns." Because this reality doesn't have to be our future. Some days, I even get to teach Batman how to swim, float, swim.

18.12.2021

I've got THREE openings for refresher lessons starting May 31st! If your kiddo has already been trained in ISR but you want to make sure they've retained what they learned before summer, grab a lesson now! I currently have lessons starting at 4:00, 5:20, and 5:50 pm available! ... We encourage kiddos to get lessons every 6 months because as your child's body grows, their center of gravity shifts, which means your kiddo will need to practice making different adjustments to achieve the back float position they learned. So while ISR Refresher lessons also build your kiddo's confidence and allow them to explore and develop new abilities as they grow and continue practicing with their instructor. Send us a message if you want to chat further or grab a lesson through the link below: https://www.valleyisr.com/signup

One of the things we make sure your kiddo knows how to do is quickly get into their float no matter how they fall in. And funny enough, sometimes the flipping is some kiddos FAVORITE part of their lesson.

16.12.2021

If you're a mama of boys, this stat is for you! But we believe it's important that ALL kids have the skills to save themselves if they ever find themselves in the water alone. Make sure you jump on our waitlist to hear about lessons for the 2021 year! Because the sooner your kids get lessons, the safer they'll be.

16.12.2021

As parents, our tendency is to want to jump and give advice when our kiddo is working on something new, especially if there are some tears. But during lessons, your role is to be the encourager! We want you to be present and give support by smiling, clapping, and offering verbal encouragement. Your kiddo is working hard and you should show how proud you are of their accomplishments. But it's best to avoid saying anything instructional, like Float on your back!... or Swim to the wall! even if it appears that we're working on that particular skill. By not jumping in with your own instructions, your kiddo can pay full attention to their instructor, which is key to not only gaining skills but building a trusting relationship with the instructor, too. #valleyisr #harrisonburgva #downtownharrisonburg #vafamilies #swimminginstructor #swimlessons #swimming #harrisonburg #rockinghamcounty #shenandoahvalley #family #swim #family #kids #swimlessonssavelives #letsswim #harrisonburgvirginia #bridgewater #bridgewaterva #valleyfitness See more

"Before Rowan (age 6) started lessons with Ms. Ashley, he was NOT jazzed to put his face in the water and was scared to be without his floaties (which I'm embarrassed to say). But within a week of lessons, his whole demeanor in the water changed! By the time he was done with lessons, Rowan not only had the skills to save himself if he ever fell in but he also had a new love of the water that was so fun to see. As a parent, I also felt completely different and so at pea...ce because I knew that my child now had an important set of skills that could possibly save his life. It's, by far, one of the best investments we've ever made. And it makes it even better that Ms. Ashley is simply the best!" - Sarah, ISR parent #valleyisr #harrisonburgva #downtownharrisonburg #vafamilies #swimminginstructor #swimlessons #swimming #harrisonburg #rockinghamcounty #shenandoahvalley #family #adoption #letsswim #harrisonburgfamilies See more

I am super proud to be a part of a team of highly trained ISR Instructors throughout the country! ISR instructors undergo extensive training to ensure that we can teach the ISR's Self-Rescue method and are aware of how to keep your kiddo's safety our top priority. To be considered a certified ISR Instructor, I had to:... Undergo screening through extensive interviews before qualifying to earn certification. Study with a Certified Master Instructor, who develops a unique training program that targets each Student Instructor's learning and teaching styles. Complete an 8-week intensive training and certification program, which includes a minimum of 80 hours of supervised in-water training. We also study and are tested in the subjects of child psychology, learning theory, physiology, and the behavioral sciences. Once an Instructor is certified, we are required to complete annual reviews and re-certification to ensure that our skills and techniques continue to meet ISR's high safety standards. So when you enroll your kiddo in ISR, you can rest assured that you're receiving quality lessons from a highly trained instructor! See more

While we believe all of these precautions can play a role in drowning prevention, including fences, alarms, and effective supervision. But the 4,000+ drowning deaths per year bear a grim testament to the fact that these traditional approaches break down and that our current strategy is missing a key component: THE CHILD. ISR’s core conviction is that the child is the MOST important part of any drowning prevention strategy and our 300,000+ ISR graduates and 800 docume...nted survival stories are proof that children can save themselves. And teaching those skills is what ISR is all about! See more

This story is one for the books! A sweet kiddo in our community was playfully thrown into a pool, but came out with a huge fear of water...right down to the bathtub. Her sweet mama said they had tried every kind of lesson out there and read anything they thought could help, but they were at a loss. ... Luckily, we connected because her mom understood the importance of giving her the necessary skills to save herself, but she wasn't prepared for what happened next ... Over the course of a month, 10 min a day, this sweet kiddo became a confident swimmer and grew to LOVE the water! She now calls herself a "swimmer" and I love thinking about all the (safe) FUN she will have in the water for years to come.

It's the time where you feel like you've made it! The final weeks of your kiddo's lessons. But what can you expect as we wrap up? These final weeks are devoted to making sure your kiddo can utilize their new skills on their own, without an instructor prompting them. So, we'll be making sure they can put the entire swim-float-swim or rollback-to-float sequence together. We'll also use the final week to practice swimming in summer and winter clothes. Why do we do this...? Because most aquatic accidents happen when the child wasn't even supposed to be near water and when they're wearing normal clothes. And that feels very different to swim in than a bathing suit. Since our priority is always safety first, we have your kiddo practice swimming in regular clothes (and even a large winter jacket) so they are skilled to save themselves no matter the circumstances. Once your kiddo has completed all these steps and shown they can repeat their sequence on their own, they'll graduate from ISR with some very important skills! #valleyisr #harrisonburgva #downtownharrisonburg #vafamilies #swimminginstructor #swimlessons #swimming #harrisonburg #rockinghamcounty #shenandoahvalley #family #swim #family #kids #swimlessonssavelives #letsswim #harrisonburgvirginia #bridgewater #bridgewaterva See more

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning is the number one cause of accidental death for infants and young children between the ages of 1-4. As a drowning prevention resource for your family, ISR recommends a multi-layered approach towards water safety in your home. Here are 5 important keys to water safety:... 1. Effective Supervision The most critical line of defense is adult supervision. No level of aquatic skill can replace active supervision. If your child is ever missing, look in the water first. 2. Pool Fences Install a permanent 4-sided fence with self-locking gates. Ensure that the pool fence is at least 3-5 feet from the pool edge. 3. Alarms Make sure all doors and windows leading to the pool are locked and alarmed. 4. Survival Swimming Lessons A moment's inattention does not have to cost a child his life. ISR's Self-Rescue training is an added layer of protection, teaching your child water survival skills in a completely safe environment. 5. CPR If an emergency happens, it is essential parents and families are prepared. Learn to perform CPR on children and adults and remember to update those skills regularly. See more

For 20-30 lessons, your child will meet with their ISR Instructor, 5 days a week. Each lesson will last no more than 10 minutes per day and throughout our time together, we will focus on teaching your kiddo a proper back float, as well as The Rollback-to-Float Sequence or The Swim-Float-Swim Sequence, depending on your kiddo's age. At the end of each day, we will place your tired kiddo on their side to rest and let out any air bubbles from their hard work. ... And then the next weekday, we'll do it again! See more

What makes ISR different? If you’ve had any experience with other programs that claim to teach babies how to swim, you might have already discovered what sets ISR apart. But the biggest difference is in our focus, which is on DROWNING PREVENTION, not simply learning to swim.... Your kiddo's ability to survive an aquatic accident depends on their ability to orient themself in the water, get in a restful position that allows them to take a breath, and keep breathing until they can be rescued or get out of the water on their own. The number of drowning stories we have heard repeats the importance of this simple, yet effective skill that we want EVERY child to have. Unfortunately, kids who just learns to blow bubbles in the water, or learn that floaties or rafts will keep her in an upright position, will not have the skills necessary to survive if she falls into the water. So our #1 goal at ISR is to equip your child with independent aquatic skills that will become the foundation for a lifetime of safe enjoyment of the water. See more

You did it! You made it through the FIRST WEEK of lessons! The first week is often the toughest as your kiddo gets oriented to lessons and a new way of approaching the water. And while there may have been tears and challenges along the way, we have started to build the foundation that will help your kiddo develop the skills they need to be safe AND confident in the water! ... See y'all next week for WEEK 2!
