On deck with the legendary Olympic coach Jack Roach at the Richmond Futures meet. I had the opportunity to get a dinner with Jack one time and it was an amazing experience. Jack is the kind of coach (and person) to be just as likely to want to talk about life, as he is about swimming. He told stories of travel, life, love, Olympians, and swimming. Jack is best known for his creation, management, and success of the USA National Junior Team, which was at the time a visionary concept. Since then, the USA Swimming National Junior has molded itself into the most prolific and dominant Junior (18&U) team in the world.

Being creative and teaching butterfly with some shadows today. . . Some things to consider: 1. Start off in an H or #11 position.... 2. High elbow pull underneath the shoulders. Through the hips! 3. Use the momentum from the pull to initiate a relaxed ‘airplane’ recovery; pinky high (‘to the sky’) and thumb on the surface. 4. Relaxed ‘landing’ back in the H. 5. Repeat. . . #swimming #summerleagueswimming #usaswimming #ymcaswimming #swimsight #theswimgrid See more

Here are two common flutter-kicking problems: 1. Poor ankle flexion. This is typical in runners. Solution: Actively work on your ankle flexibility, or focus on keeping kick high in the water. 2. Too much knee bend. Solution: Focus on reducing your ‘kick box’ and keep the legs a bit straighter.... Post any questions you have in the comments!

One common problem that takes place during a breath is the natural tendency to lift or press against the water for a breath. This is due to not fully reaching forward with one arm, and lifting too much of the face out for the breath. Focus on a lower breath (one goggle in, one goggle out), and reaching the lead arm to full extension. While doing so, keep the ear on or near the shoulder.

Learning to pull with a vertical forearm is a crucial skill. Lots of swimmers collapse the elbows and don’t get to engage muscle groups such as the lats and pecs. When learning to pull with a vertical forearm swimmers can go from pulling a ‘handful’ of water, to grabbing an ‘armful’ of water. An easy visual is to imagine the arm going ‘over a barrel’ and then sweeping back.

Thank you to all the swimmers, parents, coaches, officials, and volunteers for a wonderful experience at the 2019 PCCAL Championships. Our New Albany Country Club Penguins improved on last years 3rd place and finished 2nd out of the 6 teams. Congrats to the champions Scioto Country Club on their victory and a very smoothly run meet. See you all next summer!

My former coach, mentor, and good friend Kevin Weldon (seated second from the right) head coach of the Dayton Raiders Swim Club, on a Distance swimming panel at the ISCA Hall of Fame Summit. He’s seated along with two other inductees in the ISCA Hall of Fame Class of ‘18, Mark Bernadino and Bill Rose, both known for their elite distance coaching. I had the special pleasure of being the recipient of the 2018 ISCA Professional Development Scholarship.

Junior Olympic champs, 2006. It was my very last JO meet. I’m in the back, holding the 13-14 Boy's Age Group trophy. My teammates and I dominated. We won over half of the individual events and went undefeated all five of our relays. Our team, the Dayton Raiders, won the overall championship that year. My winning time (1:51.71) in the 13-14 200yd Backstroke was a state record by almost 3 seconds and the top time nationally for the '05-'06 season. Age group swimming can offer so many wonderful memories and experiences, but it should be done the right way. That means emphasizing TECHNIQUE, SPORTSMANSHIP, and HAVING FUN. That’s what it’s all about at that age. Speed can come later. So, good luck to everyone attending the 2019 Long Course Junior Olympic Championships in Oxford this weekend. Race well and HAVE FUN.
