We receive lots of messages asking what we recommend their child use in the water if we don't recommend puddle jumpers, etc....AND WE RECOMMEND THIS! ***...You are either holding them or they are not in the water. PERIOD. Sit them on a float beside you (not in a vertical/legs hanging position), but otherwise in NOTHING that lets them be independent in the water. If they can’t swim, why make them think that THEY CAN?*** Water is an environment that can KILL if you are not skilled to survive in it, so why are we teaching children that it is fun and safe? It is NOT! Not until they are skilled (and even then they still need supervision) Unskilled kids in a pool who can't swim (even though THEY THINK THEY ARE SWIMMING) in their floatation devices are an accident waiting to happen. A fatal accident. If they cannot swim and you don't want to get in with your kids, FIND ANOTHER ACTIVITY to occupy their time with. Please, PLEASE stop setting up children to become the next drowning victims. ***Edited to add: There is a time and place for life-jackets, just NEVER to make a child think they are swimming independently. Coast guard approved life-jackets are acceptable and often REQUIRED on a boat and/or places the child might fall into a body of water. Letting them jump in with a puddle jumper is teaching them that they will pop right up once they are in the water. Kids DO NOT understand that the puddle jumper is bringing them to the surface. So, if they get to the water without you or the puddle jumper - would they know what to do??
