Repost by @pangeaseed On the humid afternoon of May 9th, 1945 seven young black people arrived at segregated Haulover Beach in Miami and proceeded to wade into the ocean. It was a bold and peaceful act which set off ripples that would eventually ignite the national civil-rights movement 10 years later. Prior to 1945, beaches in Miami were designated for whites only. By August that same year, Miami-Dade County decided to designate its first colored beach on a small barrier ...island along the coast of downtown called Virginia Key Beach. This moment in history is one example of many instances showcasing water’s involvement in structural racism. . There are many pieces of the puzzle when understanding the complex role of water within the context of African-American history. Whether we’re paying attention to the unresolved water crisis in Flint, Michigan, water-based disasters like Hurricane Katrina or the traumatic experiences at sea during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, there is no doubt water has been weaponized to oppress people of color. . In contrast, water has been a culturally symbolic element that represents spiritual renewal and nourishment which dates back to our African ancestors. As we step into the next key moments of our collective experience, let’s create new ways the ocean-loving community can #AmplifyMelanatedVoices and do the work to remove barriers that prevent people of color from enjoying the plethora of aquatic activities that the world has to offer.
