Water Safety Wednesday! How do we want our children to feel around the water? We want the right balance of respect, confidence, and the competence to back that ...up. If a child only ever experiences the water while wearing a floatation device, they will not develop an accurate understanding of the water. They will think the water will hold them up and take care of them. If they were to ever fall in unexpectedly, they will not know how to react appropriately to help themselves. If they ever made it to the water unsupervised, they can have full confidence to jump right in. False confidence, without skill and without respect for the water, can lead to disaster. On the other hand, if a child knows that the water demands skill that they do not have, they will remain fearful of the water. They will grow up avoiding swimming activities or water deeper than they can stand in, or panic any time they feel they do not have control in the water. Without being taught independent skills, a fear and distrust of the water will continue. ISR students understand what the water requires of them. We want them to respect that they will have to react accordingly if they enter the water. Their confidence typically comes along with their independent skills, as well as practicing often, with their family or with their instructor, just like with any newly acquired skill. Give your child the right balance of how to FEEL about the water. Contact your closest ISR instructor: www.infantswim.com And stay tuned next week for more Water Safety Wednesday!

Thank you Isr Amy Mann for this: The PROBLEM With Floaties. By floaties, we mean: arm bands, inflatable rings, rafts, noodles, puddle jumpers, etc.... Flotation devices such as these float children in a vertical position. Head sticking up, feet hanging down, arms out to the side with legs bicycling to move around the pool. They are LEARNING that this position in the water is how to get air. They are LEARNING inappropriate postures that they will return to if they happen to get into the pool without the flotation device. A child that plays in floaties will not learn how to maintain their own buoyancy, and will panic quite quickly if they find themselves in the pool without one of these devices, or if one of the arm floats falls off, or the noodle gets away from them, or they fall off the raft or ring this poor posture caused by flotation devices will likely affect a child’s ability to perform the necessary skills if they lose the flotation device or fall in the water without it. The scariest part about flotation devices is that children that wear them think they can swim. Young children simply cannot make the cognitive connection that the flotation device is what is allowing them to breath and play with their head sticking up in the pool. As for our skilled ISR students, what are the best toys to play with in the water? First of all, MOM and DAD! Secondly, sinking toys and dive toys that will encourage head down, horizontal postures in the water. Children from 6 months to 6 years old that do not yet have ISR Self-Rescue skills can visit our national website at www.infantswim.com to find the instructor closest to them. Stay safe!

What a great way to handle pool time. Thank you to my colleague, Lisa Bolin! From an awesome swim mom: Lisa,... We were at a little pool party with friends and coworkers this weekend. The only time Ruth and Elijah were allowed in the pool was when we could be in there playing with them. After about 45 minutes we could tell they were exhausted, so we got out with them, dried off, hydrated, ate snacks, played outside the pool, etc. After they rested up a bit they started feeling a little left out since they didn't have water wings or floaties like all of the other kids around their ages. Okay, Elijah was basically oblivious, but Ruth felt a little left out. Despite their feelings, they knew the boundaries with water and didn't try to go jump in or do anything outside of their skill level which made us proud and relieved as we were all able to enjoy our social time. When we were getting ready to leave, one of the two year olds who is only allowed in the water with water wings floaties was fed up that he couldn't dive in and play with the big kids. His parents (and every adult at the party) had been chasing him and/or keeping him out of the water the whole afternoon which had been pretty exhausting. He clearly had no respect for the pool as both something fun and potentially dangerous. Anyway, when we were packing up to leave this little one made one last ditch effort to get in the pool without adult supervision or intervention. He ran and fell right into the deep end, sank, and started to flail/freak out. Luckily there were three adults within an arm's reach and his mom was able to fish him out immediately. That was scary to watch! It definitely made us even more grateful for our decision to put our kids through ISR and to stick to the "no floaties" rule. So...Thank You for all you've done to help keep our babies safe! We hope you have a wonderful summer! Blessings

#2- Water Watcher Chezik Tsunoda of No More Under lost her son, Yori, at a friend's pool near Seattle, Washington. He had just started taking swimming lessons a...nd was reliant on a flotation device in the pool. He slipped under the water unnoticed at a gathering surrounded by adults and children. Designating a water-watcher could have saved her son. At pool parties, there can be a misconception that everyone is watching the children, but in reality, no one is. Responsible adults can take turns being a designated water-watcher. Remain free from distractions. Your only focus is scanning the pool and making sure the children are safe. Drowning is fast and silent, there is no splashing or yelling for help. Now, Chezik fights for No More Under.

Important information.

It happened this past Friday afternoon. I put Jazzy, Bryson and Bryson’s friend on the back porch with lunch and a movie. I went into my office to finish u...p some emails. Ten minutes later.....all I hear is Bryson screaming Mommy. I ran out and for some reason I thought someone was choking. But all I heard was lake and Jazzy. I started running. Before I go on, let me tell you that Jazzy is 3 years old. She started ISR swimming lessons when she was 6 months old. She’s like an olympic swimmer. She jumps in, goes down the slide, swims to the bottom...she’s a pro. As I’m running I kept thinking. She can swim. I know she can swim. Why are they screaming? As I opened the gate to the long dock...all I could see was a man who was working in the yard next door lifting her out of the lake. From my view.....her back was towards me. She was soaking wet. The man was holding her by her wrists and she looked limp. Just imagine that for a second He’s lifting her up by her wrists, all I see is her back side, she’s soaked and she’s not moving at all. I started screaming as a ran down the dock. I honestly felt like I died inside for 10 seconds. I was screaming Is she breathing? And How long was she under for? Just as he pulled her up onto the dock.....she turns around and says ....Mommy, I fell in the lake! And then my heart started beating again. She was totally fine. I found out later that they went out there to fish. She slipped off the side of the barge. She fell in, but then swam and held onto to the side of the barge. She’s a pro. She’s literally in a lake....fully clothed ....and swimming to get herself out. So mamas I tell you.......ISR lessons are an investment. An investment of time. An investment of money. But it’s so worth it. I can’t even explain the feeling I had for those ten seconds. And even after I felt physically drained from head to toe for the rest of that day. ....and that was only 10 seconds. I’m mad as heck that they went out to the dock without telling me ..... but I’m thankful for ISR. I’m thankful Jazzy is a champion swimmer. See more

Important information on puddle jumpers

Katrina Le Za ISR promoter. Pediatrician. Lost her child to drowning. I’m not sure if today is Eleanor’s birthday? Maybe send her some love. **PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SHARE, YOU MIGHT NEED TO COPY AND PASTE MY WORDS SINCE IT'S SHARING JUST THE POST I SHARED"... Today is the day my daughter has been dead longer than alive. Her twin sister has now lived longer without her than with her. Her older brother and sister remember her but her twin doesn't. She only knows what she sees in pictures. Her new little brother will never get to know her. All because I DIDN'T KNOW that drowning was the #1 killer of kids aged 1-4 and how it's in the top 5 causes of death for kids of ALL AGES. I didn't know about the layers of protection and what that really entailed. I stupidly thought we were doing everything right. I know sharing our story has made a difference. People tag me all the time in pool posts, swimming safety questions, ISR questions etc. Please please please continue to educate. We are no where near done with this. Kids are still drowning at an alarming rate. There is no 1 easy solution. Water is fun and i absolutely will never encourage anyone to avoid the water except if it cannot be done safely. When i say kids should be in arms reach or held in the pool if they cannot swim independently, I am not being mean. When i tell you that puddle jumpers can do more harm than good and that they and all flotation devices are made for open water and NOT swimming pools, i am not judging you. It's not being over the top when I say that if you have many kids and need flotation devices to take them all the the pool, you shouldn't go. When I advise on pool fences, door and window alarms, swimming lessons, CPR i am not lecturing you. You cannot be too careful. ISR is a wonderful tool. It is gentle. They do NOT ever throw kids in the water, they don't hold them under water, they don't let them be under water for a long time. If they are doing that, report them. That's not ISR. It's okay if kids cry during lessons. A crying child is a living child. We have had lessons at our house for 2 weeks. Even the child that SCREAMED THE ENTIRE TIME can float when they enter the water. ISR is for every child, it's not for every parent. Of course ISR isn't available everywhere. Regular lessons can be just as good. Swimming lessons should teach skills QUICKLY. Days to weeks not weeks to months. Mommy and me classes are GARBAGE. They teach a love of water and give kids NO SKILLS whatsoever were that child to get back to the water. Kids are already innately drawn to water. They don't need more reasons to love it. Please keep educating in Eleanor's name. I appreciate it more than you know. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3246272558733277&id=1506459796047904
