This is Callum. Callum is 4YO and has nonverbal Autism. When his mom reached out to me about swim lessons, I knew I wanted to help just as I have with other autistic children I have worked with. Being that Cal has an intense attraction to water (as all children with autism do), I wanted to make sure that he could save his own life if he were to find himself in an unfortunate situation. Children with autism 160x’s likely to drown than other children. When he came... the first day, I asked his mom if she were able to tell his emotions and she said, Oh, you will know when he’s mad. Callum expresses himself in the only way that he knows how; laughing, screaming one of the few syllables he speaks and when he is mad or in distress, he cries and pouts his lip. This is day 28 of Cal’s lessons only 12.5hours of total instruction. I thought he would be screaming at me if he were mad, as he did for a few lessons when he was really working hard to figure out his float but he is content now and has fully mastered his skills. He has to work HARD for this, but he wants to get it. He has so much determination to do so. He is so strong and he was able to learn ISR self-rescue skills! We are so proud of him for the amount that he perseveres at each and every lesson. 2020 That’s a wrap for ISR Lessons! A year of pure craziness - ups and downs, but still able to reach children to learn how to become aquatic problem solvers in the water. COVID-19 changed many things this year but despite that ISR Aqua Kids was the busiest than ever.
