The best way to keep your child safe in the car is to use the right car seat. When used correctly, car seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 70%! 1.) Babies need to ride in a rear-facing car seat until they're at least 2 years old! 2.) When they've outgrown that seat, they're ready for the forward-facing car seat. As you're making the switch from rear-facing to forward-facing car seats, be sure to check the label to ensure your child is within the weight, height, a...nd age limits for that seat. 3.) Each type of car seat is different so make sure to read the owner manuals for both your vehicle and your car seat. When possible, find an expert to help properly install your car seat!

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), kids ages 1 to 4 are at the highest risk for drowning and many deaths happen when children have unexpected access to water. In their first few years, children explore their surroundings through their senses seeing, touching, hearing, smelling, and tasting. As a result, babies and young children are drawn to putting things in their mouths from car keys to small toys, and more! This is why it’s important to follow safety measures to prevent children from being harmed as a result of their compulsion to drool, chew, and suck on everything. 1.) Cut food for toddlers into tiny pieces and do not serv...e children under five years of age small, round, or hard foods. Be cautious during mealtime almost 60 percent of non-fatal choking incidents are food-related! 2.) When purchasing a toy, consider your child’s age and take a second to review the warning labels. 3.) After bringing home a new toy, always check for small parts or choking hazards!

09.12.2021

Many parents will have their attention divided this summer as they work from home while trying to entertain their children. While it may seem clever to send your children to the backyard pool for a few moments of peace and quiet, swimming should never be a solo activity. At home, you’re the lifeguard! And if your child is visiting another household that has a pool, make sure you know (and agree with) the safety precautions they are taking, too.

09.12.2021

As with other children’s activities, repetition is important to learning swim skills, but so is the environment where the practice is taking place. Swim skills are mastered by DOING alongside highly trained and certified instructors in the water to assist you. You cannot replicate swim lessons online without putting your safety at risk!

Summer is here, which means lots of backyard water play! Follow these tips to make sure everyone stays safe around all types of backyard pools. 1.) Remind your children that they are NOT to go near any pool or body of water without permission from an adult.... 3.) Remember that if children are visiting your home, you’re responsible for their safety around the water! 4.) DO NOT rely on water wings or any other inflatable flotation device to save a child in a water emergency. 5.) Always empty baby/inflatable pools after use, children can drown in just an inch of water. 6.) Ensure that all toys are removed from the pool after use. 7.) Put a cover on above ground pools when not in use, and lock or take down any ladders. 8.) Make sure your yard is fully fenced all the way around and not accessible from anyone outside. 9.) DO NOT allow any horseplay, breath-holding games or dunking in your pool. 10.) Make sure that anyone who is using the pool knows NOT to dive head first into the pool.

Those goggles! While goggles can make the swim experience more comfortable, children who become dependent on swimming with goggles may be at greater risk of drowning. When an unexpected incident occurs in the water, it’s unlikely that a child will be wearing their swimsuit, goggles, or any other equipment. It’s important for children to be comfortable swimming with and without goggles to prevent panic if they ever find themselves underwater without them! Especially with chi...ldren, panic is natural when ending up in the water unexpectedly. That’s why our classes focus on swimming AND survival skills. We teach children how it feels to jump, roll and float in the water with their clothes on and how it feels without the goggles they’re used to wearing. Practicing these skills in a safe and controlled environment prepares children for unexpected situations outside of our lessons! See more

Ready or not, here I come! Does your child know what to do after jumping or accidentally falling into the water?

03.12.2021

Don't rely on swimming lessons, life preservers or other equipment to make a child "water safe." And don't assume that a child who knows how to swim isn't a risk for drowning. Anywhere there is water there is risk of drowning, especially for children. We recommend always using a buddy system, wearing proper life jackets during activities and reviewing the use of safety equipment and emergency procedures!

While playgrounds offer fresh air, friends, and fun, without proper supervision accidents can occur. Consider these safety measures to keep children safe! 1.) Keep your eyes on children no matter their age while visiting the playground. Young children may not expect dangerous situations and older children can have a tendency to push their limits, so it’s important for a parent or guardian to keep them in check. 2.) Consider playgrounds with shock absorbent surfaces, such ...as rubber, sand, or mulch. Falling is the most common playground injury, and these softer surfaces will be more cushioned than asphalt and other hard surfaces. 3.) Dress appropriately for the playground by avoiding clothing with drawstrings that can get caught on equipment.
