MENTAL HEALTH IN SPORT It’s World Mental Health Day so we thought we’d talk a bit about dealing with mental health in sport & how much of an important factor it is as an athlete! Sport is known for having positive effects on mental health, releasing dopamine & decreasing stress levels. But it can also come with a lot of pressure and be very demanding on the body and mind. ... It’s common for athletes to struggle with mental health especially when competing at a high level- and it’s not often spoken about. Here are some things that we think are great for improving your mental health as an athlete: Having an honest & open relationship with your teammates, coach and family. These people are all on your journey with you will be there to help if you need it. The more honest you can be with these people the easier it is- we all struggle and there’s nothing wrong with asking for help. Making sure you get enough sleep- I know it sounds like an obvious one & may be too simple .. but it’s so easy to get overtired as an athlete (especially if your at school/work too!) and we can sometimes forget to rest enough. Talk to a role model or someone who’s been there before you- no matter where you are in your journey, someone has been there and done it before. Find someone at your club or an older athlete you look up to and send them a message! You’d be surprised how many people would love to help and give their advice. Remember, at the end of the day it’s meant to be fun! No matter how big or small your goals are, sport should be something you enjoy, so try not to put too much pressure on yourself and enjoy the moment. Send us a DM!
