Why Backwash a Pool? So we’re talking about how to backwash a pool filter here, but a lot of people often use the shorthand of just backwash a pool. You know what we mean, right? Of course, you do. You also know you have to keep your pool filter clean. But when it comes to how to clean a pool filter, why is backwashing a good method?... As pool water passes through your diatomaceous earth (D.E.) or sand filter, it leaves behind dirt, oils, and other debris, which are collected in the filter mediumeither D.E. powder or sand. Over time, as water continues to pass in just one direction, the filter medium will become clogged, which will reduce your filter’s effectiveness. When you backwash a pool, you send water backward through the filter, and out the waste or drain port. This forces all the debris caught in the filter to dislodge so you can easily remove it and restore the filter’s normal functioning level. Think of it as using a strainer in your kitchen sink. Bits of food can get stuck along the bottom of the strainer, and the only way to get them out is to turn the strainer over and run water through it from the opposite direction. Backwashing a pool works on the same principle. While backwashing generally works the same way regardless of the type of pool filter, the procedures do vary a bit.

Good water circulation is extremely important in pool care! Bad circulation can cause all sorts of problems including cloudy water, algae infestations, dirty spots, and more. You can solve a LOT of consistent pool issues just by improving your pool's circulation. 1. Empty any dirt and debris from your skimmer baskets and pump baskets. And keep them clean as often as possible.... 2. Keep the pump running for at least 12 hours a day. More on this here. 3. Angle your return jet(s). If you have only ONE, angle it away from your skimmer and towards the bottom of your pool; I'd say seven o' clock. However, if you have more than one jet, alternate. Aim one at seven o' clock and one at nine o' clock and so on. This ensures fresh filtered water is flowing towards the bottom of your pool and keeping the water moving clockwise. 4. Check the pressure gauge on your filter tank. There should be good pressure coming out of your return jets. If not, you may need to clean and backwash your filter.
