Summer heat combined with normal levels of phosphates and extra pool usage often leads to algae if your not careful. You can make your odds a lot better by using a small amount of preventative algaecide once per month. If you already have algae you can use the same algaecide at it's full dose. The algaecide I use most during the summer is non metal based which means there is no chance of causing any stains on your pool surface. You can also swim in just a few hours. The algaecide's chemical name is "polyoxyethylene" 60%. Make sure your chlorine level is at or above 3ppm and brush all of the walls, steps, and swimouts. It also helps to have a clean filter if you are fighting algae. Good luck! Ask any questions below. Have a great summer! If you do not have a copy of my book, you can find it on Amazon. Spring is officially here and summer is just around the corner! Now is the time to get the pool in great shape so you have a much better summer. Here are a few things you can do that will only take you about 15 minutes. 1. Brush the pool walls. Dirt and small amounts of algae build up on the pool walls and are sometimes hard to see. That is until you run the brush down the walls. You will then see if there is a cloud of dust that comes off or not. Any dirt or algae on the wal...ls now makes the perfect starting off point for bigger algae issues later. 2. Check the chemicals and shock the pool. Do a full water test on your pool water and consider shocking the pool now, before you have any issues with the water later. Shocking the pool will "burn up" any combined chlorine and organic debris that can contribute to algae. One gallon of liquid chlorine or one pound of granular shock per 10,000 gallons of pool water will do the trick. Make sure the pool pump will run for at least 4 hours. 3. Add a preventative algaecide. Algae takes a while to form in pool water. There are several stages of growth before we can even see algae in the water or on the walls. After the shock treatment you can add a full dose of algaecide 60 to prevent algae for the next few months. You will be off to a great start this summer season! Make sure you check out my book on amazon! http://www.amazon.com/Pool-Maintenance-Made-Easy-Seco//ref I just released the second edition that I am very proud of. I believe this book will truly save you hundreds of dollars per year not to mention many headaches. I currently have no reviews on Amazon for this version and am looking for people who need my book to try it out for free in exchange for an honest review. Reply here if you are interested. See more
