Dear all As you may have heard by now, I have taken the decision to postpone the return to swimming in 2021. The main factors are the rapid rise in cases, the higher threat to younger people that the new strain has and the likelihood of further restrictions in two weeks’ time i.e., possibly going into Tier 4. Although not definite it appears that we are following on the wave from London and the South East and this seems likely, so rather than start...stop...start and conside...ring my responsibility for the safety of all, not just the swimmers but all helpers, coaches and teachers I have taken the decision to ‘Press Pause’. I am fully aware the under 18's can (under guidelines) continue, but I consider the staggered start of schools and the imminent vaccine for students and feel that by holding off now will give us the benefit of more knowledge over the next few days/weeks. Hopefully, we will be back to training very soon in a much more stable system. I understand that this decision will probably be unpopular but please understand I have not taken it lightly. I am calling an emergency meeting of the main committee for us to discuss this as a committee and to work out a way forward for a safe and sustainable return to swimming. I wish you all a Safe and Happy New Year. Kindest Regards Martin Pashley Chairman ES&LSS

SUSPENSION OF ALL SWIMMING FROM NOVEMBER 5TH Following the Government announcement last night we will once again sadly have to stop swimming from Thursday 5th November to Wednesday 2nd December. We will currently be able to restart swimming again on Thursday 3rd December but please keep checking this page for posts updating you about when we will be able to return to the water.... Swimming will take place for C&D and Masters swimmers between Sunday 1st November and Wednesday 4th November following the current regional restrictions. Unfortunately yesterday (31st October) was the final Saturday night Learn to Swim session before the new National Lockdown. C&D and Masters Swimmers please cancel your standing orders again until further notice. We appreciate many people pay their fees on the 1st of the month. Hopefully because the 1st is a Sunday the payment won’t go out and you will still be able to stop it. If payments are received we won’t be making refund payments but will hold the amount as a credit for when we are able to restart swimming again. E.g. if you pay in November whilst we are in lockdown we won’t expect payment from you in the month we return to swimming again (which will currently be December). Thank you for your cooperation. Stay safe and we look forward to welcoming you back to sessions again when we are allowed to do so. Ian Lang and Sue Westaway ES&LSS Treasurers.

A lifeboat crew was left in "awe" of a 10-year-old who survived for more than an hour at sea using advice he had seen in a BBC TV documentary. ------------- A massive well done to the young lad remembering the 5 steps #floattolive advice: If you get into trouble in the water, follow these 5 steps ... 1. Fight your instinct to swim hard or thrash about 2. Lean back, extend your arms and legs 3. Gently move your arms and legs to help you float 4. Float until you can control your breathing 5. Call for help or swim to safety #respectthewater #floattolive #rnli

This is a devastating blow for Liverpool and there swimming community. You'd think swimming pools would be the safest sport to keep going during this pandemic with the chlorinated waters that kill bacteria etc. Let's hope this area doesn't reach tier 3.

MRS AGGIE JORDAN. 1922 2020 It is with great sadness that we have to inform all members that our longest standing Honorary Life Member, Mrs Aggie Jordan has passed away at the grand age of 98 years old. Aggie and her husband Ralph joined the Exmouth Swimming and Life Saving Society in the early to mid 1960’s. Aggie would be on the table on a club night down at the old pool on the seafront making sure everything ran smoothly. ... Aggie was an ASA club delegate and also a Western Counties delegate. Aggie was the Treasurer for the Society and served for 20 plus years. Aggie was also Trophy Steward for a number of years. Aggie was a strong supporter of the Centenary Year and the Channel Relay Swim in 1993. She had learnt to drive after losing her husband and with Pam Snowshall, who had helped teach her to drive, set off to drive to Dover to support the swimmers. Aggie retired from the Society a few years ago but always kept in touch. Aggie’s family have very strong ties with the Society and some of her great grandchildren are learning to swim with us now. Last year was the club’s 125 year celebration at Ocean. Aggie was determined to come and as the Society’s oldest member was asked to cut the celebration cake. Aggie, you were a very special lady and will remain in our hearts always.

Today (Sunday) will be the last day the RNLI Beach lifeguards are on duty at Exmouth as their summer schedule comes to an end. That means that the RED FLAGS wil...l not be put out as of tomorrow. The beach is still a NO BATHING ZONE as indicated by the beach signs. There are still strong tidal currents that makes this part of the beach hazardous for bathers. Our volunteer Watchkeepers will still be on duty looking after your safety 7 days a week on the beach and in the water as we move into Autumn. Remember to #BeBeachSafe as you head out to catch the last glimpses of summer. www.exmouthcoastwatch.co.uk #RespectTheWater #NCI #SaveLives #nationalcoastwatchinstitution #EyesAlongTheCoast #vhfch65 #solentcoastguard

Message from Swim England: We fully support efforts to tackle the spread of Covid-19 but believe the decision to close swimming pools is an error. Data has shown swimming pools to be safe environments and swimming and being active in the water is incredibly important for people's physical and mental wellbeing. This is even more important as we all seek to get through another lockdown. We know how much it has meant for our clubs (who have been able to) to be back in the water ...and are conscious that too many have not been able to return to the water since March. Ahead of the vote in parliament on Wednesday we’re calling on the Prime Minister to allow pools to remain open.
